While I have been addmittedly negligent in recent months of not following through on my bird watching efforts, it is not to say that I have not been prepared for the possibility of seeing some birdlife from our kitchen window. As the weather has shifted from Summer warmth to Fall coolness, I have been regularly refilling both the nyhjer and black sunflower mix tubular feeders. The binoculars, fieldbook and notebook have also remained in the kitchen at the ready.
Yesterday, while stopping by at home during the day, Anne observed a new bird. This might seem odd, after keeping a keen eye on the yard since spring, one would think we'd seen it all. Au contraire mon ami!
Whiel I have been less than vigilent in watching the yard, my wife Anne has been much more successful in keeping her eyes open while in the kitchen, and this sense of attention paid off when she obsreved a smallish grey bird with a puffy white belly. When I went to bed last night to read at around 11:00 p.m., I had thought that the name of the bird in her vision would remain a mystery.
But, knowing my wife, I should not have been surpised that, when I looged on to check my e-mail this morning, I was greeted a wall paper image of wha I can only be the identification manual photo of the mystery bird, a junco, I believe. (I will post the image once I can figure out where it's from--I tried to work backwards, but had difficulty following the trail!)
So, it would appear that the "job" of backyard birdwatching is far from over, and to reframe I a UFO tag-line from fifties movies, I'll have to "keep my eyes on the skies!"
Breathe in, breathe out... YOU AND I ARE ALIVE!
